Local Flavor
Vietnamese Restaurants & Grocery Stores
Growing up with Vietnamese food, I’ve always looked for places that bring that familiar comfort and flavor. Here are some of my favorites around Salt Lake for Phở, Bánh Mì, Bún Bò Huế, Bún Riêu, and ingredients. I’ll keep it updated as I discover more delicious spots!
Restaurants
- Phở Saigon Noodle House — a great place for Phở and bánh xèo (Vietnamese crepe).
- Ooh Pho — try their Phở Thố Đá, a hot-stone version of phở that comes to the table still sizzling.
- Oh Mai Sandwich Kitchen — a go-to spot for tasty bánh mì and fresh rolls.
- All Chay — vegan and vegetarian Vietnamese menu.
Grocery Stores & Markets
- Long An Market — you’ll find a wide range of products from Vietnam here, plus authentic ready-made dishes like Phở, Bún Bò Huế, Bún Riêu, Cháo, and more at the cafeteria inside.
- Kim Thanh Supermarket — another good spot for fresh produce, Vietnamese ingredients, and ready-made dishes for takeout.

Get Involved with Local Animal Rescue
I’ve always had a soft spot for animals, and many local shelters and rescues are at capacity right now. If you’ve ever wanted to help but aren’t sure how, especially if your place doesn’t allow pets or you can’t foster long term, here are a few easy ways to get involved.
Ways to Help
-
Short-term fostering (weekends or vacations)
Even a few days can make a big difference! Reach out to a local rescue and share your availability, whether that’s a weekend, five days, or when another foster is out of town.
Hearts 4 Paws is often happy to accept short-term fosters. You can contact them directly, or reach out to me and I can connect you with someone there.
- Be clear about your availability and comfort zone (e.g., size in pounds rather than “small” or “medium”).
- Most rescues provide food, crates, and supplies; you provide a temporary safe home.
-
Hounds Around Town (dog day trips)
Programs like Hounds Around Town at Salt Lake County Animal Services let volunteers take shelter dogs out for short field trips like walks, hikes, or car rides.
It gives dogs a much-needed break and helps staff, too. Snap a few photos or videos to share; happy, relaxed pics often help pets get adopted faster.
How to join: Check your local shelter’s website for “dog day out” or “field trip” programs and schedule in advance. Second Chance for Homeless Pets offers a similar program.
-
Transport volunteer — drive pets between shelters/rescues
Join transport networks, watch for posted “legs” that fit your route, and raise your hand; coordinators will handle the logistics.
-
Adoption event support
Weekend events need help with setup, greeting visitors, quick potty-breaks, and matching pets with adopters. Reach out to any local rescue or shelter and let them know you’d like to help; they’ll be thrilled to have extra hands.
